The Environment Agency issued a flood alert from Dartford to Allhallows for the high tide at 1pm.

It said: "North westerly winds are forecast during a period of high tides combined with surge.

"Water levels are expected to overtop coastal defences and foreshores between noon and 2pm this afternoon.

"Expect tides to be higher than usual. Key coastal areas at greatest risk include Royal Pier Road and Gordon Promenade in Gravesend.

"People are advised to stay away from risk areas and take care next to the coast. We will continue to monitor the situation and reissue this alert for subsequent tides if required."
