Residents have slammed fly-tippers after a large amount of rubbish blocked a road.

Downs Road, in Istead Rise, near Gravesend, has been made inaccessible after someone left a huge amount of waste in the middle of it.

Among the rubbish was a black leather chair, bedding, bags of rubbish and soil, as well as disused cardboard.

The incident comes just days after ambulance crews on a 999 call were forced to re-route twice after being blocked by fly-tipping.

Istead Rise resident Richard Rushen, who snapped the pictures of the rubbish, labelled the offenders "disrespectful".

He said: "Istead Rise is a lovely place to live, like most other places in Kent it's the minority that ruin it for the rest of us, and most likely someone who doesn't live in this area.

"A complete lack of respect for anyone and with the inability of the law to act on such appalling behaviour, it's only going to get worse.

"It's been suggested that the Istead Rise community club together for CCTV to cover every road in and out, I think this is a great idea but equally why isn't the powers that be already doing this?

"It could be completely self funding from fines and the sales of any vehicles that been used in such activities."

The 46-year-old maintenance engineer says the countryside is being ruined by fly-tipping and not enough is being done to stop it.

He added: "It's most weeks we're getting it to be honest, this is the worst I've seen though. I was unable to get pass this morning and I was in a cycle. Absolutely no chance of any emergency services getting past.

"It's such a shame that our lovely countryside is being ruined and not a lot is being done about it. As a tax payer it pains me to think that we have to pay to get this cleaned up."

Alan Moore commented: "Absolutely disgraceful. What on earth is happening to our national pride?

"We used to take a pride in our homes and surroundings... not anymore."

Gravesham council and Kent Highways have been approached for a comment.
