A man in his 70s has died after his mobility scooter was hit by a car, it has been revealed.

Officers investigating the crash in Thames Way, Northfleet, yesterday are now appealing for witnesses.

Police were called to the junction with Vale Road, at around 11.45am, near the police station.

A man in his 70s was taken to King's College Hospital with head injuries after the blue mobility scooter he was riding on was involved in a collision with a black Volkswagen Touareg - a type of SUV.

The air ambulance were called, and the man was taken to hospital by road, but he later died.

The road was closed while officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit carried out their initial inquires.

A woman who lives in Vale Road, who did not wish to be named, said the road was closed when she came back from Gravesend on the bus at 1.15pm.

She said: "The bus driver asked me where I was going and told me the road was closed and that he was dropping people off at London Road. I walked from Dover Road and saw some debris on the side.

"I thought it was a child's scooter."

Another man, who lives in Vale Road, said the junction was very dangerous.

He said: "People get frustrated with the lights as on one side they are too slow. There doesn't seem to be any equality on the timing compared to the traffic going right across.

"This is the worse crossing in the world. When you read things about a crash it makes you realise how dangerous it is."
