Shame of teen Juraj Jano over sex crime at AMF Bowling alley Gravesend

00:01, 28 October 2016

A teenager who had been in the country for around four months is now on the sex offenders’ register after he sexually assaulted two girls.

Juraj Jano, 18, touched one teenager’s bottom and another in her groin at the AMF Bowling Alley, Imperial Business Park, in Thames Way, Gravesend, earlier this year.

He was one of several teenagers who stopped the girls as they made their way to the toilet. It was at this point the girls were sexually assaulted.

The pair managed to get to the toilets and phoned friends, who were also inside the bowling alley, for help.

They decided to leave, and as they headed to the car park they were confronted by Jano and his mates.

A confrontation broke out and Jano took off his belt and tried to attack some of the group.

Jano, who is originally from Slovakia but now lives with his mum in Cobham Street, Gravesend, was arrested and charged with two counts of sexual assault and one count of affray, which he admitted when he appeared before Medway magistrates.

Four other males have been charged with offences in relation to the incident but have yet to be dealt with.

James Nichols, prosecuting, said: “As they were heading to the car they were followed by the defendant and his group and one girl was again touched on the bottom.

“There was then a confrontation with the girls’ friends and punches were thrown. Mr Jano then takes his belt off to use it as a weapon to attack the girls’ friend.

“The girls ran off to get help as the friends backed away. He [Jano] took an active part in the attack.

“The men suffered injuries, bruising, a sore jaw, a red nose and cheek and one man suffered a small cut on his left eye.”

Magistrates heard Jano had not been in trouble with the law before and had come to Britain after living in Sweden with his brother after his father died in 2012.

Richard Atkins, defending, added: “This is a regrettable and unfortunate incident.

“He was 17 when this happened and it was over clothing [the sexual assaults].

“He didn’t strike anyone with the belt and the others started the violence.

“He had only been in this country for four months or so and had been drinking vodka.

“It was more than he would usually drink and he had very little recollection of it and just remembers waking up in a police cell.

“He is deeply shocked at what he has done and it is out of character. He is working as a packer in a warehouse and lives with his mum.

“He said to me his life is destroyed and he is extremely sorry.”

Magistrates jailed Jano for 18 weeks but suspended the term for 18 months. He was also placed under curfew for three months and must complete a rehabilitation activity requirement for 20 days as directed by probation officers.

He was also placed on the sex offenders’ register for seven years, ordered to pay the sexual assault victims £125 compensation each, the two injured men £50 compensation each and £85 court costs.
