Youngsters will launch a video promoting a free youth counselling service tonight.
A short film informing young people of the help available will premiere tonight at the 10th Gifted Young Gravesham (GYG) annual showcase at The Woodville, in Wrotham Road, Gravesend.
The video features a teenager who is feeling isolated and in need of someone to talk to. He discovers the Active Listening service and finds a helping hand from a professional counsellor.
The free service is available for 11 to 19 year olds and will run from The Grand Healthy Living Centre in King Street.
Filmed in Gravesend, the star local lad Jamal, 15, volunteered his time to appear in the film and record the voice over. He is also part of the GYG event, running the lighting and sound for the show.
The talent show type performance has been organised by the group of youngsters after taking workshops with a host of theatre professionals and raising funds over the last year.
Youth work manager with GYG Jackie Coupar, said: “Ten years ago a group of young people asked us to help them create an event to highlight their talents. I never imagined that 10 years later it would be bigger than ever.
“The dedication, enthusiasm, team-work and friendships that I have seen develop is overwhelming. Creating positive memories is so important for young people and GYG aims to do just that - to inspire, to support and to celebrate their achievements.”
Active Listening offers six weeks of face-to-face counselling with a professional mental health worker. All sessions are confidential and take place after school.
It is self-funded by young people from Gravesham. It is now its 10th year and has seen demand for the service grow year-on-year.
Doors will open at 6.45pm tonight with the show starting at 7.30pm.
