Gravesend League chairman Graham East presents Danny Cable with an award
Sun rounded off another memorable year with more trophy success at the North Kent Sunday League’s presentation evening on Saturday at Fleet Leisure.
Having won the Kent Sunday Premier Cup for a third successive season, plus the Senior Division and Reporter Cup, Sun’s long-serving right-back Danny Cable was named the league’s player of the year.
Cable signed for Sun 10 years ago but managed only two games before sustaining a double leg fracture while playing on a Saturday for Gravesend League Henley United.
"It took an air ambulance to take him to hospital where a metal pin was inserted from knee to ankle," said North Kent Sunday League chairman Graham East.
"Many believed his playing days were over but within two years he was back.
"He was subsequently selected for the league representative side, becoming an ever-present for Sun."
Nigel Odd of Senior Division club Gravesend United won the league’s coveted personality of the year accolade.
A founder member of the club in 1989, he has been secretary ever since, answering emergencies when the team have been short of players. United have also won three senior division sportsmanship awards while Odd’s organisational skills earned him the Senior Division’s secretary of the year last year.
Craig Wood was named referee of the year, following up his award as referee of the year from the Gravesend branch of the Kent Referees’ Association.
He has been promoted regularly and is now a Level 4 official on the Ryman and Southern League lines.
Last season he refereed the League Cup final and this year the Senior Cup. He started refereeing at the age of 16 in boys’ league football before graduating to the adult game in the 2005-06 season.
