An 11-year-old Northfleet Technology College pupil – who has been named locally as Szymon – passed away in hospital after suffering multiple injuries.

The arrested boy, who comes from the Gravesend area, was quizzed before being released to return to the police station on February 17.

Meanwhile, tributes have been laid near the scene in Vale Road, close to the junction with Colyer Road, Northfleet.

They included flowers, candles and tea lights, basketballs and cards with messages such as "you will always be remembered" and "you are in a better place now".

Two basketballs have also been transcribed with R.I.P and "you were the best at ball".

Another said: "RIP Szymon. I'll miss you mate. I hope you're still playing basketball in heaven."

Yesterday the college sent a letter to parents informing them of the tragedy.

Head teacher Jane Partridge said: "I'm sorry to inform you that one of our community died this morning after being hit by a vehicle on his way to school.
