A memorial space in honour of two "colourful characters" has been proposed in a town centre.

The small piece of land in Gravesend town centre would be forever remembering Beryl Martin and her husband Brian 'Bruno' Warner.

Named in their memory, Warner Corner has been put forward and is now being considered by council officers whether to officially grant the new name.

The idea has been proposed by Gravesend resident James Willis, who lived next door to the couple for three years.

Beryl, who would have turned 84 tomorrow (Wednesday), died in late 2020 and was an artist and well-known figure in the town as friends said the town will be a duller place without her eccentricity and energy.

Her husband, Brian, who was better known as Bruno, died in 2018 and was a beloved waterman working in Gravesend his entire life.

Mr Willis said: "They were right characters – Beryl was an artist and Bruno was a river person.

"It's just a nice story and they were our neighbours and such colourful characters in the town.

"The Warners were involved in tug boats on the river and Beryl painted the bollards with the town logo.

"It's just sitting empty and we've got a few campaigning to get it renamed Warner Corner. It's a small patch and everyone walks through it.

"The council have been positive about it and there's a couple of councillors on board.

"KCC's officer has said they have no objections to it and it's gone to Gravesham council now."

James added it is "nice to see" the temporary sign put up in the area with permission from contractors Conway which is working on the new Gravesend bus hub along Barrack Row and Garrick Street.

The unnamed patch of ground has a small grassed area with a few trees on the corner of Barrack Row and Darnley Road.

James says he's spoken to Gravesend historian Christoph Bull who says he can't see any records of the area being named officially.

"We can't see anything to say we are overwriting history," James added.

"It's a memorial and is remembering some very special people which Beryl and Bruno were. It's also for Gravesend people to remember others too.

"I think it will be nice if people can put something there for their own loved ones – it says for everyone lost in 2021 so that's a nice idea."
