Travellers have set up a camp near Chantry School and Ordnance Road car park in Gravesend

02:00, 13 September 2016

A group of travellers who turned up on a patch of grass near a primary school have moved on.

The group, in caravans, were on the green opposite Chantry School, in Ordnance Road, near a car park and skate park.

A number of caravans arrived yesterday afternoon, at around 4pm and more turned up throughout the evening.

Marilyn Lloyd lives close by and said: "Annoying is an understatement. They've been moved on from elsewhere and they've just turned up here.

"They were here last year and moved on but it hasn't stopped them coming back again."

Another neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said: "It's going to be hell with them here again.

"Last time they had caravans everywhere, there were dogs not on leads and it's dangerous near a school. Plus all the noise, especially when they're settled and bring their big generator."

Last month a group pitched up in tents and caravans in Woodlands Park, Gravesend. It took more than a week to move them on and the council was left to clean up the mess.

A spokeswoman for Gravesham council said: "Three caravans parked on a grassed area in Ordnance Road, Gravesend, yesterday afternoon have moved on without the need for council action. Council staff will clear up litter scattered in the area today.

“Last month a traveller encampment in Woodlands Park left after the council took court action to have them removed.”
