Travellers set up camp on land in Valley Drive, Gravesend
11:53, 29 November 2017
People are angry after travellers set up camp at a lorry park.
Caravans moved on to the site opposite Nell’s Cafe, in Valley Drive, Gravesend, several days ago.
Brian Gardner, 69, who regularly cycles past, said it was in a mess.
The former internal finance worker said: “I cycle past there everyday – there’s glass all over the place.”
He said there were children running around.
Speaking about the caravans, he added: “There must be about 15 of them and they have caused a lot of mess. It’s not safe.
“They always leave all their garbage and the taxpayers have to clean up.”
The lorry park has had a troubled past. Last year, owners Highways England had to close it twice in the space of a few months to give it a deep clean.
The site, just off the A2 in Gravesend, had been littered with tyres, food waste, plastic bags, cardboard boxes and other rubbish for much of the year.
Highways England (HE) closed it for a major clean-up in March 2016. It was a month before it reopened. By November, it was shut again for another clean.
Mr Gardner said the area was closed again about a month ago.
HE has been contacted for a comment.
