General Election 2019: Dartford and Gravesend voters head to the polls

Kent heads to the polls today as voters up and down the county cast their ballot.

Polling booths across Dartford and Gravesham will open from 7am for residents to have their say on who should be their next MP.

Counting of the votes will begin shortly after the polls close at 10pm.

In Gravesham, 83 people will be responsible for counting up the cast ballots at Cascades Leisure Centre in Thong Lane, Gravesend with a result estimated between 4am and 5am.

Acting returning officer for the count is chief executive of Gravesham Council, David Hughes, for which this will be his last general election before he steps down from his post next year.

The Dartford result will be tallied up from 67 polling stations and announced at Fairfield Leisure Centre in Lowfield Street around 3am.

There are 53 polling stations across Gravesham in which 73,234 electors are eligible to vote.

These booths will be monitored by 150 staff who will be on hand to assist voters with any questions they may have.

Turnout at the last election in Gravesham was 67%, just below Dartford at 69%, which was in line with national attendance at the polls.

Of course, some voters will have already had their say via postal vote.

In Gravesham one in five votes cast will be determined in this way, with a further 331 registered proxy voters.
