Reckless yobs are being blamed for throwing a rock off a motorway bridge which landed on a cinema-goer’s car underneath.

Gravesend motor mechanic Alex Veiga got a nasty surprise when he went back to his car after seeing a film.

The 20-year-old, of Wrotham Road, Meopham, parked up as usual to see the new Superman film Man of Steel.

When he returned a few hours later just after midnight, he found the windscreen on his black 2010 Ford Fiesta was smashed and there was massive dent in his roof.

A rock about the size of a football was on top of his car, and a traffic cone lay beside his vehicle.

It happened at Medway Valley Leisure Park in Chariot Way, Strood, which is about 100ft underneath the M2 bridge.

Alex said: “I was walking back and I could see something on the car.

“From a distance it looked like a takeaway wrapper, but as I got closer and closer I could see it was a rock.

“What would possess someone to do something like that? Anyone could have been walking along.”

He says his car was parked in view of a security camera, although security staff at the leisure park told him it wasn’t working.

“He [the security guard] said it wasn’t the first time something has happened there.”

Alex, who works for Prestige Motors in Gravesend, doesn’t know how much the repairs to his first car will cost yet, although he estimates a new windscreen will set him back £100.

The incident has been reported to the police, who are investigating. A police spokesman said: “If these items have been thrown from the bridge it’s clearly a reckless act and one that Kent Police would take very seriously.

“If anyone witnessed anything we would urge them to contact us on 101.”

A Highways Agency spokesman said they hadn’t been contacted, but added: “If police contacted us we’d be happy to help with their inquiries.”
