Daryl McMahon experienced the full range of emotions on Saturday afternoon.

The Ebbsfleet manager was punching the air when two goals from Jordan Parkes helped his side race into a 3-0 lead against Concord Rangers at Stonebridge Road.

But McMahon's delight turned to despair as two goals for the visitors changed the complexion of the game and left him yelling at his defensive players.

Matt Godden's stoppage-time strike meant it finished 4-2, leaving the boss ultimately happy but with plenty to ponder after 90 minutes which can have done little to help his stress levels.

McMahon admitted: "It was frustrating sometimes, when you’re 3-0 up and in control and then decision-making and bits of bad play that you don’t expect from the calibre of player we’ve got, happens.

"It’s just one of those things for me to get used to and try to adapt to.

"I’ve got to be able to think with a clear head on the sideline - and I try to.

"That was a little bit of an emotional rollercoaster but it’s part of the job, I suppose."

The game looked over when Parkes scored his second goal in the 49th minute.

McMahon said: "When it went 3-0, we were in total control. I was comfortable at 3-0. I thought we were looking good. Cookie had a shot, Stuey had a shot, Godds got in one-v-one and the keeper made a good save so we had plenty of chances.

"But someone switched off to allow Taaffe to get in round the back and I was disappointed with that goal (which made it 3-1).

"The second goal was the killer, I suppose. The first goal is somebody getting used to our new shape, how we’re going to play, and he’s got to learn quickly, and the second was just a poor goal all round.

"The decision to go back to Brandon from the halfway line, he hasn’t got to do it, and then you’d expect a keeper of Brandon’s quality to be able to clear it (he missed the ball and conceded a corner).

"It was a bit of a mess when it went into the box. The wind played a big part in it but it’s not a great goal.

"We had plenty of chances going the other way. We didn’t have as much control as we normally have but I thought we were more exciting. We had a lot more chances and we probably should have taken a few more of them."

Results elsewhere went in Ebbsfleet's favour. Maidstone lost 1-0 at Margate and Oxford City were held to a 0-0 draw by Maidenhead, meaning the Fleet are now 10 points clear at the top of National League South with a game in hand.

McMahon said: "Christmas always throws up funny results, everyone knows that, because you get the games so close together. It always throws up funny moments, mistakes, incidents and we’re delighted to get the win.

"All we can worry about is ourselves. We’re going to drop points, other people are going to drop points for the rest of the season and we’ve just got to keep ticking off as many wins as we can.

"Luckily for us, we’ve done that today and results elsewhere have gone our way."

Ebbsfleet are away to sixth-placed Whitehawk on Bank Holiday Monday.
