Preston Edwards was heading for the Ebbsfleet exit door until manager Jamie Day got the sack.

Edwards and Brandon Hall shared the goalkeeping duties at Fleet last season but neither would have been first-choice under Day in 2015/16.

Edwards said: "The gaffer wanted to bring his own goalkeeper in and as a professional, you’ve got to look out for your career.

"Jamie said the same to me and Brandon, that he wanted to bring his own goalkeeper in.

"I’ve got a year left on my deal but I knew I had to look elsewhere – and then Macca (Daryl McMahon) came in. The situation’s completely different now."

At the start of the season, with Steve Brown in charge, Edwards was in possession of the No.1 jersey but his season turned on one incident at Hayes & Yeading.

Sent-off for handball outside the box – a decision which the club successfully appealed against – Edwards came out of the team and Hall seized his chance.

Edwards said: "When I got sent-off, the team did well when I was out of the team. I’ll hold my hands up and say that’s fine.

"Then I got injured in the warm-up before the Hendon game (on November 29) and ended up being out for two-and-a-half months. I was frustrated anyway because I wasn’t playing and it just felt like it was one thing after another."

That game against Hendon came at the end of an eventful week for Edwards.

He said: "I’d signed everything to go to Nuneaton on loan. I agreed it on the day of the Gosport game but the day after that, Steve Brown went and they said no-one was going out on loan. The (transfer) window shut that Thursday."
