Aaron McLean's latest goal might not have been his best but he didn't care.

His low shot squirmed past St Albans keeper Joe Welch on Tuesday night to hand Ebbsfleet their third win in four games and send them 12 points clear at the top of National League South.

McLean tried his luck from the edge of the box and was rewarded for having a go.

He said: "I always look to get my shots away, I try to get the ball out of my feet and shoot early and that’s what I did.

"The ball came in to me, I took a touch, had a shot and it wasn’t the best of shots - but they’re the ones that end up going in.

"When I seem to be hitting them cleanly, keepers are pulling off saves.

"Listen, I’ll take 20 of them a season.

"Luckily for us, I got one away and it’s bobbled in and we’ve got three points from it.

"Ugly goals, nice goals, as long as it goes in the back of the net, I don’t care how they go in."

Ebbsfleet had 20 efforts on goal but had to settle for a 1-0 win.

McLean said: "It was frustrating because we created so many opportunities and weren’t putting them away. The goal was probably one of the worst opportunities we had and it’s bobbled in.

"We created so many opportunities and come away a little bit disappointed that we’ve not scored more goals.

"Saturday (at Oxford City) was another one where we had so many opportunities.

"At any level, 1-0 is never a safe score. All it needs is one mistake or one good bit of play by the opposition and they’re right back in it.

"We want to be killing games off but we did a professional job on Tuesday and fair play to the lads at the back because they were rock-solid and kept a clean sheet.

"As long as you win the game, that’s all that matters."
