Ebbsfleet boss Jamie Day knows he could be fighting for his job at the start of next season.

Day admitted this week his team’s promotion hopes are over after defeat at Concord on Saturday saw them drift 10 points from the Vanarama Conference South play-off places.

The 35-year-old expects Fleet owner Dr Abdulla Al-Humaidi to back him over the summer but he accepts there will be no margin for error in 2015/16.

Day, who succeeded Steve Brown as manager in December with Ebbsfleet fourth, met with the board recently.

He said: "When I first took over, it was ‘we’re going to make a lot of changes’ and they were happy with that. They felt and I felt, that we could still get in the play-offs.

"In that transition we lost too many points and even since we’ve brought the new lads in, we’ve drawn too many.

"We knew there was a good chance of not getting in the play-offs as well as getting in it and they backed that up when I saw them in the last couple of weeks.

"I’ve got to build a squad that’s capable of winning the league next year, so that’s the aim. I know that if we don’t start the season particularly well next year, that causes a few problems for me as the manager.

"But I know where we’re at and what needs to be done so hopefully we’ll get it right over the summer to come back firing."

Day spent five years in charge of Welling and he improved their league position every season but he won’t be given that much time to get things right at Stonebridge Road.

He said: "My contract is a rolling contract so there’s no time on it. It just goes as we go along, which suits both parties.

"When we first met and when I took over, I said it’s not going to happen overnight, it’s going to take time, so they’ve got to back me in doing that.

"Everything I’ve asked for from the chairman and Peter (Varney), I’ve been given, so I still believe they’re 100% behind me."
