Ebbsfleet moved nine points clear at the top of Vanarama National League South on Tuesday night.

Goals from Danny Kedwell and Tom Bonner earned them a sixth straight win and extended their unbeaten start to the season to 11 matches.

But they were made to work for the points by a Weston-super-Mare side who arrived in north Kent bottom of the table, four points from safety.

In a game rearranged after the original was abandoned because of floodlight failure, the Fleet's decision to make this game free entry attracted a bumper crowd of 2,045 - more than double their average home gate.

Boss Daryl McMahon sent out the same team which started Saturday's 4-1 win at Havant & Waterlooville but there were three changes for the visitors.

Weston, who came into the game on the back of a 2-0 home defeat to Sutton, brought in Alex Byrne, Scott Wilson and Jake Mawford for Tristan Plummer, Tsvetan Filipov and Mitchell Page.

The hosts were straight on the front foot, not allowing Weston to settle.

Matt Godden's clever turn on the edge of the box earned the Fleet a free-kick which Kedwell powered past the wall from 18 yards. Luke Purnell knew little about Kedwell's strike, which was straight at him, although the goalkeeper did manage to get the ball behind for a corner.

Jordan Parkes took it but Godden could only head over at the far post.

Weston barely touched the ball for 10 minutes and Joe Howe's fizzing cross from the left bounced just wide of the far post with Kedwell unable to get there in time to apply the crucial touch.

Parkes' next corner, from the right, was a training ground special. He picked out Stuart Lewis, who was standing alone on the edge of the box, and the former Gills midfielder drove his volley narrowly over the bar.

The visitors showed no attacking intent in the first game but they did have their moments here, Joe McClennan a particular threat from right-back. His low cross was cut out by Fleet skipper Bonner as the men in black and white shirts ventured forward.

But after some great interplay down the right flank, when Matt Fish and JP Kissock found space when there appeared to be none, Fish's floated cross almost crept inside Purnell's far post.

Dayle Grubb drove a shot over from distance at the other end but Fleet were about to strike.

Clayton Fortune was caught dozing on the edge of his own penalty area and when Ebbsfleet worked the ball into the danger zone, Kedwell was on hand to oblige with a clinical close-range finish.

Undeterred, the visitors got in behind the Ebbsfleet defence and it needed a good sliding tackle from Dean Rance to cut out Jamie Edge's cross from the left.

Parkes and Godden kept trying things from set-pieces. Parkes curled over a corner from the left and Godden, on the stretch, volleyed the ball back across goal and almost into the top corner.

Brandon Hall was called into action for the first time, clawing an Ollie Barnes header out from under the crossbar after Stuart Lewis had been cautioned for conceding a free-kick 30 yards out.

Kedwell was left unmarked to smash a shot wide from Parkes' next corner and Godden had the final chance of the half, latching onto Fish's through-ball and drawing a smart save from Purnell.

The second half was less than two minutes old when Godden was allowed to run in behind the Weston defence. His low shot from the right beat Purnell but flashed just the wrong side of the far post.

But it didn't take long for Ebbsfleet to double their lead. Godden was fouled as he ran down the left and when the free-kick was delivered into the box, Bonner showed a striker's touch to sweep the ball home with his left foot.

Lewis stung Purnell's palms with a strike from distance and the home crowd were in party mood but silence fell around Stonebridge Road in the 66th minute.

Tsvetan Filipov had been on the pitch for just three minutes when the Bulgarian midfielder beat Hall with a low left-footed shot from just inside the Fleet box.

That goal had Ebbsfleet rocking for a while and Dayle Grubb flashed a shot across the face of goal as the main stand began to fill with nervous murmurs.

But the hosts began to rediscover a little of their earlier rhythm when Parkes sent Joe Howe running down the left and his low centre reached Kissock. The midfielder's shot was blocked and Godden drove the loose ball over the bar.

Parkes, allowed to run at the Weston defence, saw his powerful shot tipped over by Purnell before trying his luck again from wide on the right. Parkes' cross-shot flew through the six-yard box without a touch as the Seagulls survived.

In a nervy finale, Kedwell almost punished some rotten Weston defending but although his volley flew over, the points were safe - just.
