Ebbsfleet still owe more than £20,000 to HM Revenue & Customs and donations to keep the club alive have started to dry up.

The unpaid tax bill continues to cast a shadow over Stonebridge Road and the Fleet’s playing staff are yet to be paid their wages for April.

Club bosses have transferred £2,600 of donated money to HMRC but chairman Jessica McQueen admits clearing the rest of the debt looks a daunting task.

She said: “We are still talking with HMRC but things are very tough here. We’ve transferred £2,600, which is a great effort, but it’s not what we need, it’s not enough.

“I don’t want anyone to think we’re ungrateful for what they’re doing, but we’re going to need a bit more than that. It gets to a point where people physically can’t give any more and we may have reached that point.

“We are still having conversations with them (HMRC) but it’s really tough right now because nothing much has moved forward.”
