Charlie Sheringham has spoken out about the mystery injury which ruined his season and baffled medics for months.

The 27-year-old striker hasn’t played for Ebbsfleet since the start of December, when he came out of the team to have a groin operation.

Sheringham should have been back playing within a few weeks but subsequent complications meant he played no further part in 2014-15.

He said: "It was difficult because they couldn’t get to the bottom of it.

"I saw a lot of people, I had a lot of scans and injections and the initial report was that it was a groin problem. That’s why I had the Gilmore’s Groin surgery.

"I thought that had done it but four weeks later, I was still having niggles around my hip flexor.

"I ended up seeing a hip specialist and had scans until they built up a picture of what the problem was.

"It was a bone growth in the hip joint and it wasn’t ever going to go on its own so they did an arthroscopy, shaved down the bone growth and cleaned the cartilage.

"It was quite intrusive – they had to go deep into the hip rather than working on the surface.

"When I first had the groin trouble, I only thought I’d be out for four weeks but it turned out to be half the season.

"It was not what I wanted at all."
