Meopham’s Kate French is targeting a place on the podium at this week’s Modern Pentathlon World Championships in Poland.

The 23-year-old, who now lives and trains in Bath, is one of four women on the Great Britain team alongside Mhairi Spence, Freyja Prentice and Samantha Murray.

French started her bid for glory today (Wednesday) and she’s back in action on Friday before taking part in the mixed relay. Her event comprises fencing, swimming, showjumping and a combined event of pistol shooting and cross-country running.

French finished fourth at the World Cup final and 13th in the European Championships.

She said: "The worlds are the highlight of this year. I think my form’s been good.

"The World Cup final was great, although the Europeans were a bit disappointing, so I’m hoping for a better result. I’m going to give it my best. A medal would be the perfect end to the season.

"Last year, I was 10th, so I’d be happy with anything better than that. I’m pleased to be representing my country. It’s exciting."

French’s family still live in Meopham, although training and travelling commitments means she only gets back to Kent a few times a year.

This week’s competition may be the biggest event of 2014 but for French, there’s something even more special on the horizon – the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

She said: "This year has shown I have the potential (to get there). It’s given me more confidence and I’m pleased with how it’s going.

"British modern pentathlon is strong at the moment, especially on the girls’ side. The boys are coming on strongly and we’ll have some more young ones coming up next year."
