Daryl McMahon cut a frustrated figure after Ebbsfleet's game against Weston-super-Mare on Tuesday night was abandoned because of floodlight failure.

Fleet led 2-0 and had played some scintillating football when the lights went out at half-time.

They eventually all came back on but only after referee Josh Smith had called the game off.

McMahon said: "It’s frustrating for me and especially the players. They were terrific in the first half, it was a really good performance and to lose the points because of the lights is frustrating.

"There’s certain things we can control. We can control what we do on the pitch as a team but we can’t control the opposition, the lights, the referee. We can only control what we do – and what we did tonight was very good.

"The first half performance is all I really want to talk about. It was excellent, we played fantastic football, moved the ball ever so well and put their whole team 30 yards from the goal because we were so dominant with the ball.

"It was a great performance and sadly it’s going to be chalked off the record books."

Weston boss Ryan Northmore was in referee Smith's ear throughout the delay as Fleet officials tried to get the lights back on. Annoyed the game wasn't abandoned sooner, he took his players off the pitch long before the match was eventually called off at 9.20pm.

McMahon said: "I totally understand it. They were 2-0 down, they weren’t playing well and he wanted the game off.

"I don’t blame him. If I was in his situation, if that was my team, if we were away from home and not playing well and that happens and you’ve got an opportunity to get out and start again, you probably would take it. You can’t blame him for that."

Aside from Ebbsfleet's performance, the big positive on the night was a healthy midweek gate of 1,023. The home supporters stayed behind to clap their team off and the club plan to offer free admission when the fixture is re-arranged.

McMahon said: "That’s a great turnout from us on a Tuesday night against Weston. I don’t know how many Weston fans were here so for us to have that many fans here, and for the boys to put on that show, it was really good and I just wish we could have seen it through."
