Stevenage FC striker Matt Godden backing Ebbsfleet United to win the play-off final

06:50, 09 May 2017

Matt Godden has backed Ebbsfleet to go one better this season and win promotion.

Godden’s final game for Fleet was the play-off final defeat to Maidstone last May before he signed for Stevenage.

The striker, who scored 21 goals in League 2 this term, has been impressed whenever he’s returned to Stonebridge Road to watch his former club.

Godden said: "They look a better side than we were last year.

"We were very good but we ran out of steam. Fleet look very good this year.

"The biggest difference I see is they look so much more solid at the back with the experience they’ve got.

"The signings they made have made a huge difference."

Stevenage just missed out on the play-offs but Godden swept the board at their end-of-season awards night.

He said: "Personally I’ve enjoyed this season a lot. It was a learning curve at the start but I feel I’ve learnt a lot and that’s what I’m about.

"I just want to continue learning, scoring goals and doing well. I just carried on from last year really.

"I had a slow-ish start at Stevenage but to score 21 in the Football League is something very pleasing.

"Once I got my eye in and got used to the level, everything seemed to roll."

Godden was at Ebbsfleet's semi-final second leg win over Hampton & Richmond and he'll be back on the terraces for the final against Chelmsford on Saturday.

He said: "It's nice to go back. I've been back quite a few times this year because I'm still close to everyone.

"The club did a lot for me and they still do. I have a close relationship with the gaffer and Pete and everyone.

"It's always nice to go back - I love seeing everyone."
