Dominic Poleon is enjoying the best form of his career - and it’s all in the mind.

The Ebbsfleet striker has an impressive 33 goals to his name after scoring four times in last weekend’s 4-2 win over Dulwich.

While everything the 29-year-old touches in front of goal turns to gold, he insists the biggest difference this campaign has been mental rather than technical.

“It's improved but it’s more of a mindset,” stated Poleon. “I don’t think I’ve actually improved how I finish but I’ve improved my mindset and how to approach chances.

“That’s been the massive thing for me. It’s been more of a mindset than a technical ability improvement.

“This is the most I’ve enjoyed my football. When you’re scoring goals it’s always good and the fact we are close (to the title) is also a bonus.”

Poleon was in the right place at the right time against Dulwich, scoring all four goals in and around the six-yard box.

“It was more anticipation,” he reflected. “You have a knack of finding yourself in the right position at the right time, sometimes it’s a bit of luck and sometimes it’s not.

“When you constantly find yourself in the right position there has to be some skill to it.

“You can’t snatch at those chances. You can find yourself in those positions and it can feel like the ball has fallen to you in the box but I’ve got to keep my head and put the ball in the net.”

Poleon has three hat-tricks to his name this season and is playing the best football of his career.

He’s clearly reaping the rewards of featuring in a side where many players could easily step up a level or two.

“I think I’ve found my level,” quipped Poleon. “I’m just delighted with how we’re playing, we’ve got a real bond as a team.

“Sometimes there’s three or four changes but there’s still the same quality when we play. I’m delighted that I’m doing my bit and everyone is doing their bit around me.

“I think we’ve improved. When I came here we were good and then we had the disappointment of how last season ended. This season, everyone has improved, including the boys who were here last year.

“That’s what is showing, with time, manager, style, everyone at the club has upped their level. After last year we all know we need to deliver more, we don’t want to be in that same position and it’s paying off.”

Ebbsfleet continue their march to the National League South title with a trip to Slough this Saturday, a game being televised by BT Sport (12.30pm).

The Fleet sit 18 points clear of second-placed Dartford, who have two games in hand, and need only three more wins to confirm promotion thanks to their superior goal difference.

No wonder there’s no sign of nerves in the Ebbsfleet squad.

“Feeling tense is wasting time,” added Poleon. “If we don’t feel like we can go out there and perform then we’re wasting time but we feel like we can perform game after game, whether it’s 4-0, 2-0 or a 1-0 win, it’s all about the next win.

“Until it is done, with this group of boys and the management team, we’re focused on pushing in the right direction and not getting carried away by a good result here or there.”
