Ebbsfleet United boss Daryl McMahon in talks with potential signings

00:00, 17 May 2018

Ebbsfleet boss Daryl McMahon has already opened talks with several transfer targets.

He's not looking to make sweeping changes to a squad which reached the National League play-offs last season.

But with the aim to match or better their sixth-placed finish, extra quality will be coming in.

"It's been busy," McMahon said. "I met three potential new players on Monday, at the early stage of meeting them.

"We're in a market competing with lots of big clubs and sometimes you've got to be patient to make sure you get the right ones in - which we will do.

"The way we finished last season has really put the club on the map.

"I've had a lot of interest from players that want to come to us, which has always been the case.

"We're talking about a different calibre of player now but we've still got to get the right ones.

"We've got a good group that people have got to fit in with."

Judging a player's character is as important as their football ability when it comes to recruitment.

McMahon said: "It's not always easy. Sometimes you get them right and sometimes you don't.

"I don't think we need lots of new players because we've got a pretty steady group.

"I've got to make sure the ones I bring in fit into the group well and sometimes you've got to meet people two or three times to make sure you're the right fit for each other.

"We won't be going out, diving in anywhere. We'll make sure we get the right ones in who are going to enhance an already good group."

Negotiations with Fleet's out-of-contract players are taking place this week.

Striker Aaron McLean is set to hang up his boots this summer and put all his efforts into coaching.

McMahon said: "Aaron's a passionate person. He's got good experience but he's learning how to coach.

"He's good in the changing-room, he's a positive person and he's someone I've known for a long time.

"I'm sure he'll be OK and turn into a good coach. He's determined to do that and he's hard-working.

"He's got the right tools there and he's got good experience."
