Josh Payne gave Terry Jenkins a scare on his World Darts Championship debut.
Payne, from Gravesend, took the opening set against Jenkins at the Alexandra Palace in London on Saturday.
But the Bull, a nine-time major runner-up, hit back to win 3-1.
Payne, 23, tipped as a star of the future, hit tops for a 1-0 lead after his opponent missed six darts for the set.
Jenkins, who is retiring after the tournament, won the second set 3-1 and the third 3-0.
The decisive moment came in the fourth set when Payne started with back-to-back 180s only for Jenkins to hit back and take the leg with a brilliant 140 finish.
The Bull followed up with a 121 check-out as he moved into the second round.
