Ebbsfleet's draw with Havant was a step in the right direction for manager Daryl McMahon.

After their capitulation at Wrexham a week earlier things could hardly have got worse for Fleet on Saturday.

They did concede another early goal but were soon level and it finished 1-1 at Stonebridge Road.

McMahon said: "You have to have good performances and I think a lot of people will go away and think they did all right.

"Am I happy with the result? Of course I’m not. I wanted to win but it gives us something to build on.

"The last two matches, Gateshead and Wrexham, gave me absolutely nothing to build on. They gave us nowhere to go, apart from making five changes.

"Today it’s given us something to say ‘right, we can see x, y and z playing well’ and we need to build on that and create some momentum."

Havant's third-minute opener, scored by Aaron Cosgrave, must have given McMahon a horrible sense of deja vu.

In their last three matches, Fleet have let in five goals inside the first 20 minutes and they've conceded first in all six of their home games so far.

McMahon said: "It was a poor goal but I thought we reacted well off the back of it, once we got a foothold in the game.

"We were on top of the game and I always felt we would score.

"We had a strong bench to change that as well but unfortunately the sending-off killed us making another attacking substitution."

McMahon had no complaints with the two yellow cards shown to defender Kenny Clark, who will now miss the visit of Bromley on Tuesday.

One of five players he brought into the team was Bagasan Graham, who got the nod to play wide on the left.

On his first league start for more than a year, Graham made some strong runs and created a couple of good scoring opportunities before being substituted.

McMahon said: "Bags’ biggest problem has always been his fitness. He does tend to get to 55 or 60 minutes and he’s tired.

"It’s about trying to get him over that line but I thought he was decent in the first half. He put some decent crosses in and caused their right wing-back some problems."

McMahon left Jack King and Andy Drury out of his squad while Danny Kedwell was an unused substitute.

Asked for his thinking behind the changes from Wrexham, he said: "Legs, pace and energy - and I think we saw that in abundance."
