Garry Hill didn't mince his words after Ebbsfleet's defeat at home to Aldershot.

The manager, who cancelled his squad's day off by calling them in for Sunday training, called out the individual mistakes which cost the Fleet at key moments.

He questioned their desire and said the players had let down the supporters and management.

"I'm very disappointed and very frustrated," said Hill. "They showed a lot more desire than us.

"They were winning a lot of the 50-50 balls and the signs were there very early on. We were very sloppy early on, several players either giving cheap free-kicks away at the start of the game or miscuing balls and I found it puzzling on the grounds that after coming off a good weekend with something to build on last week, we looked like a side that was very nervous at the start.

"They capitalised on that, they bossed it and we rode our luck several times.

"It looked like we were going to get to half-time level but from our corner, the ball went away cheaply and the distance where they picked the ball up from, to our penalty area and putting it in the back of the net with ease was very frustrating on the stroke of half-time.

"You get into players and you try to rally them for the second half as a manager, you try to motivate them but by the same token, players have to show that desire.

"The desire, I'm afraid to say and disappointed to say, didn't look there today.

"I tried to freshen it up, which is disappointing that you're taking players off purely because they'd been booked.

"Alex Lawless and Josh Umerah were no different from any other player out there but they'd both been booked through frustration and there were signs today where the referee was very inconsistent. I just couldn't afford to be down with 10 men at that time.

"They got a cheap penalty, moved round Lawrie Wilson very easily and it was Bondz N'Gala who took the player out and the goalkeeper has kept us in the game. You'd think that would give us a spark but even though we'd made the changes at that time and changed the formation...

"He's been very good for us this year, Jamie Grimes, but he'll be very disappointed with the manner that he got brushed aside with the second goal.

"We had made changes at that time and we were trying to get ourselves into positions where we had one or two opportunities to reduce the arrears from 2-0.

"We then get a goal back, 2-1, there's a lift there for the crowd and we still had one or two very good chances to get an equalising goal, which would have been unjust on the day.

"I have no complaints with the result but it's the first time I can say it this season, that collectively as a group they were very disappointing in respect of their performances all the way round."

Ebbsfleet remain second-bottom in the National League and are now four points from safety.

"We didn't do enough," Hill admitted. "We didn't win enough personal battles.

"You see a game and you can't try to defend players when they haven't justified or earned that kind of support from a management team.

"When we got the goal, I thought we might get another one - not that we deserved to over the 90 minutes.

"I'm a disappointed manager tonight because I feel the supporters have been let down and the management team, even though we all work together. The players have to look at themselves after that performance, which was far below where it should be."

It's not the first time Hill has called the squad in for Sunday training.

He said: "We come in tomorrow and we go from there. You can't wrap players up or cuddle them - we didn't do enough.

"We were way short. If you don't admit that with honesty, the only person you kid is yourself. I would never do that and you know that since I've been here.

"It wasn't good enough. The first reaction is to clear your head, have a think about it and have a chat about it tomorrow.

"When you get a day off on a Sunday, you should be enjoying the Sunday with your family or your partner, relaxing and enjoying it.

"I don't like that in any way or form, that's the code.

"You have to earn a day off and we haven't earned enough today. We have to go through the game tomorrow with the players and try to put it right as soon as possible."
