Former Gravesend Grammar School pupil Fikayo Tomori has been called up for England.

AC Milan defender Tomori was named in the squad for October's World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Hungary.

With Manchester United's Harry Maguire sidelined, boss Gareth Southgate needs defensive reinforcements and Tomori, part of the Milan team that have conceded only three goals in six Serie A matches so far this season, fits the bill.

England visit Andorra on Saturday, October 9 and host Hungary at Wembley three days later. If Tomori plays in either game he will add to his first cap won back in November 2019 against Kosovo when the Three Lions rounded off their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign with a victory in Pristi.

Tomori initially joined Milan on loan in January from Chelsea after falling out of favour under then-manager Frank Lampard and signed for the Rossoneri in a four-year deal worth £25million in June.

Southgate said: "He is playing at a club (where) there is an expectation to win every week so he is performing under pressure.

"I thought he did very well at Liverpool in the Champions League game, and his next game was Juventus so he’s had big matches as well as the general league games.

"I like Fikayo in terms of his aggressiveness of his defending, because he’s got speed he is confident enough to defend on the front foot and his use of the ball is improving all the time as well.

"Milan have been delighted with him, they’ve ended up buying him and it’s been a really good experience for him."

He spent his youth career at the south west London club, winning the FA Youth Cup and UEFA Youth League, as well as being named Academy Player of the Year in 2016.
