The air ambulance also landed on a patch of scrubland about 100 yards from the store.
It is understood a man collapsed inside the supermarket, according to a witness.
Customers were still allowed into the shop, but queues were stretching outside.
A spokesman for police said: "Kent Police was called at 12.14pm on Saturday, November 14 to a medical incident in The Boulevard, Herne Bay.
"Officers are in attendance and are providing assistance to South East Coast Ambulance Service."
A Sainsbury's spokesperson said: “We can confirm there was an incident in our Herne Bay store and we are working with the emergency services to support them at this time.”
