A woman appears to have escaped without injury after her car overturned and ended up crushed near Herne Common this morning.

Police, fire crews and paramedics were called to the accident at the junction of the A291 Canterbury Road and Bushyfield Road at 7.10 am today.

The driver, believed to be in her late 20s, was driving the red Ford Fiesta, which ended upside down on its roof.

It has since been recovered and police have cleared the road after a telegraph pole was hit, which had been causing delays for motorists.

Alex Wren was driving to work at 7.50am when she saw the aftermath of the accident.

She said: “It looked pretty bad. A car was on its roof on the corner of the turning into Canterbury Garden Centre.

“Fire crews were sprinkling what looked like mud on the road to soak up spilled petrol I think.

“I heard the ambulance coming at about 7.30 am, but when I went past there was no one in the car. The traffic has been a nightmare."

Police spokesman Scarlet Jones said: "Although the car had overturned, the woman driving has not reported any injuries.

"She was checked over by the paramedics, but was up and walking around. A telegraph pole was hit which was causing delays.

"There was a wire across the road, so we had to call the utility company to help clear it, but officers have now left the scene."

A spokesman for the fire brigade added that no cutting equipment was needed during the incident.
