Crews fight fire in Broomfield, Herne Bay

Crews battled a field fire the size of 35 football pitches which broke out on the outskirts of a seaside town.

They were called to the scene in Ford Road, Herne Bay, just before 3.10pm.

Four fire engines tackled the Broomfield blaze, which spread across a field of cut corn.

A warning has been issued to those living or working in the area to keep their windows and doors closed in order to avoid large smoke plumes.

A fire service spokesman said: "We are currently responding to a field fire in Ford Road in Herne Bay.

"Four fire engines and an all-terrain vehicle have been sent to the scene to tackle the fire, which has spread to approximately 35 hectares of cut corn.

"Those who are living or working nearby are being advised to keep doors and windows closed as a precaution due to a large smoke plume in the area. More to come."

Police were called to the scene to the report of a motorbike and grass field alight.

A spokesman said: "Officers attended the scene to assist fire crews who extinguished the fire.

"Initial enquiries are underway into the incident."
