Residents were warned about smoke as firefighters tackled a woodland blaze.
Crews in four fire engines were sent to the woods near Herne Common at around 5.30pm.
People living near the Braggs Lane, Canterbury Road and New Road area were urged to keep doors and windows closed.
At 10.30pm, the fire service said crews were making good progress to bring the fire under control.
A spokesman said: "The firefighters have been working in dense wooded area trying to tackle the fire, which covers around two and a half acres or the equivalent of the size of one and a half full size football pitches which has been destroyed by the fire.
"Crews are using flexi-packs and beaters, they also used drag rakes to create fire breaks to help prevent the fire from spreading.
"Hose reel jets and main jets are also being used to extinguish hot spots during the incident."
