The daughter of a man accused of murdering her at a caravan park near Herne Bay died from strangulation, it has been revealed.

As well as Richard Kray being charged with killing Olivia Kray, 19, at Westlands Caravan Park on Friday, July 21, he is also alleged to have attempted to murder his ex-partner Damyantee Cowan by strangling her.

Wearing a light coloured T-shirt, Kray, 63, spoke only to be identified when he appeared at Maidstone Crown Court on Wednesday by video link with Elmley Prison, Sheppey.

He will enter pleas on October 24. A preliminary trial date was set for January 15 next year.

The teenager, described by a friend as a “beautiful young lady”, was pronounced dead at the scene, opposite Canterbury Garden Centre in Herne Common.

Kray is alleged to have tried to kill Ms Cowan, who is in her early 60s, at her home in Gordon Road, Herne Bay, the same day. She did need hospital treatment.

Prosecutor Martin Yale said: “The defendant is charged with murder and attempted murder of his daughter and estranged partner, both by strangulation.”

He confirmed that Kray was not fit to be interviewed following his arrest.

Judge Jeremy Carey said the case would remain at Maidstone for the time being but could be transferred to Canterbury Crown Court.

The judge told Kray: “You face two grave allegations, that of murder and attempted murder, and you will be tried by a jury should this be a case in which a trial is necessary.

"Meanwhile, there is much work to be done in trial preparation.”

Sara Harooon, defending, did not make a bail application and Kray was remanded in custody.

Jade Blackmer, who went to Hampton Primary School with Olivia, said she was a caring person.

“She was the most quiet and polite young girl going,” she said.

“She was very reserved and conscious of others. She didn’t smile often but when she did it lit up the room.

“It’s such a tragedy this has happened to such a young and beautiful lady.”
