Supermarket wars in Herne Bay as Aldi and Sainsbury's set to join Morrisons in town
00:01, 05 February 2016
Supermarket shoppers will soon be facing a dilemma of choice in Herne Bay – will it be Morrisons, Aldi or Sainsbury’s?
It’s a question no one has faced before, but with two superstores set to open soon, Morrisons bosses only have a few months left before serious competition arrives.
Developers behind the Kings Road Aldi hope the discount German chain will be open in time for Christmas, and the Sainsbury’s on the edge of town at Broomfield is already taking shape.

With such choice soon on offer, people’s views are already split.
David and Jenny Cross, of Mickleburgh Hill, said: “We shop where we like at the moment – we do a lot of shopping in town.
“We use Tesco Express in Canterbury Road and we go to Sainsbury’s or Lidl in Canterbury.
“We occasionally use Morrisons but we shop all over the place.
“We would rather go to the new Sainsbury’s at Broomfield than go to Chestfield, but we can’t see it changing our shopping habits massively.
“If Aldi is as good as Lidl we will probably use that quite a bit, too.”
Alex Ridgen, of Canterbury Road, thinks the Aldi store is attractive.
He said: “I will give Aldi a go. I have been in other Aldis and their prices are good.
“I will probably do a bit of both with that and Morrisons.
“I usually use the Canterbury Road Tesco now, but just for the change I will see what Aldi do.
“The competition doesn’t hurt anybody.”
June Bryson, of King’s Road, will also try Aldi as she thinks Morrisons is too busy.
She said: “I go to Sainsbury’s in Whitstable at the moment; I can get everything I like there.
“But I will try Aldi when it opens.
“It will be handy for me and I will try Sainsbury’s when that opens, too.
“I know that Aldi do some really good items, but I would use both.
“I hate Morrisons – it’s just so crammed with people and queues.”
Lily Way, of Victoria Park, is another Aldi fan.
She said: “I go to Morrisons at the moment.
“They are reasonable and they do good offers, but I think Aldi will be better.
“I know people who shop in the Aldi in Canterbury and they do other stuff in there like electrical goods.
“There’s a different offering and the price is the key thing.
“When you see their adverts their fruit and veg is half the price of Morrisons – they have better deals.
“I will be going to Aldi.”
Husband and wife Marvin and SamMcIntyre, of New Street, plan to split their shopping between Aldi and Morrisons.
Marvin said: “We think it will be a combination of Aldi and Morrisons.
"We always relish the competition, it’s good for custom..." - Sarah Atta, Morrisons
“It’s about convenience and the new Sainsbury’s will be too far away and they are expensive.
“Everyone is saying the supermarkets are the same prices but we don’t think so.
“It’s about cheapness with Aldi and they do a lot of products.”
With such competition fast-approaching, Morrisons spokesman Sarah Atta welcomed it.
She said: “We always relish the competition, it’s good for custom.
“Clearly if customers want fresh food, made by qualified butchers, bakers and fishmongers, the ability to use the toilet while in their own store, and get great value for money then they’ll carry on shopping at Morrisons.”
