A fancy dress-wearing fitness fanatic will complete a marathon by running laps of her back garden in an attempt to raise funds for the NHS.

Determined Karen Aristocleus, from Hampton in Herne Bay, decided to undertake the challenge after a fitness event she was due to take part in this weekend was cancelled as a result of the coronavirus outbreak.

The 49-year-old will begin the jog at 7am tomorrow - but is expecting to make slow progress.

She said: "It will not be quick as I only have a small garden, but I am up for the challenge.

“I am hoping some 80s music will help keep spirits up.”

Karen will run the first 10 miles in her garden, before taking to the streets for an hour and then returning to her home to jog the last of the 26 miles.

Proceeds from her challenge will be donated to the East Kent Hospitals Charity, which is supporting frontline staff caring for patients with Covid-19.

The organisation has raised more than £8,000 in all, and used the funds to purchase items, such as snacks, for teams who are working long shifts and toiletries so health workers can shower before they go home.

“I have done many hair-brained things during the past few years but it will be a real privilege to support the NHS in their time of need," Karen continued.

“Many NHS workers are putting themselves in the thick of it and I have great admiration and respect for all of them.

“Many families will be affected by COVID-19 and will have difficult and challenging times ahead.

"It would give me great pleasure to be able to put a smile on people’s faces by doing something fun, worthwhile and for a good cause.”
