A search has been launched for the mother of a bat amid fears the pup is unable to feed itself.

The creature, which is just a few weeks old, was taken to PDSA Pet Hospital in Campus Way, Gillingham, after it was found by a member of the public on Sunday night.

The tiny bat is feared to have been blown off course by strong winds during its maiden flight.

Bosses from Herne Bay animal charity Wildwood Trust are hoping to reunite the pup with its mother before her milk dries up in a few days' time.

A spokesman said: "We need to reunite a bat pup with its mum. The kind person took it to the PDSA Vets in Gillingham but didn't leave any detail of where the bat was found.

"The pup is only a few weeks old and doesn't know how to catch insects yet. It is reliant on its mother for milk so we need to get it back to her as soon as possible.

"We think it probably tried to fly for the first time and got lost due to the windy weather. We only have a few days before the mum's milk will dry up as they only have one pup per year."

An expert from Wildwood had been sent out to look after the young bat after it was brought into the hospital.
