Irate residents fear there will be a crash along their street as reckless drivers continue to ignore one-way signs at the entrance to the route.

Since Storm Dennis tore through a third-floor flat in Canterbury Road, blowing bricks and debris onto the cars below, work has been ongoing to make the building safe.

The route leading into the centre of Herne Bay has been sealed off, with traffic being directed along nearby Gosfield Road and Spenser Road.

But soon afterwards, a temporary one-way system was installed along Gosfield Road as queues of traffic struggled to negotiate the narrow street.

Despite this, resident Debbie Foreman says drivers are flouting the rules by continuing to enter from its junction with King’s Road.

“A lot of vehicles are totally ignoring the one-way system – each day, dozens of cars have been coming down there,” the 57-year-old said.

“Because the people from Canterbury Road think it’s one-way, they’re coming down faster as they’re not expecting things to come the other way.

“It’s dangerous. There is not the room to have cars parked either side of the road and traffic coming either side at the moment.”

Neighbours have taken to social media voice their worries about the situation, with some deciding to photograph the number plates of cars entering at the junction with King’s Road.

A dog has reportedly been run over and parked cars have been scraped by the onrushing traffic.

Ms Foreman also says drivers have verbally abused her.

“I have been sworn at because I have been out there trying to stop people,” she explained.

"A lot of vehicles are totally ignoring the one-way system – each day, dozens of cars have been coming down there"

“We’re all fed up with it – it’s making my blood boil. What gives them the right to ignore no-entry signs?

“We need cameras down there or somebody there taking notice of these people doing it, and they need to be fined.”

Kent County Council expects Canterbury Road to remain closed until Friday, March 6.

A spokesman for the authority insists it will continue to monitor the situation in Gosfield Road, adding: “If people continue to ignore the official diversion then the police should be informed for enforcement.”
