A lorry driver has been left red-faced this morning after knocking down a memorial arch in Herne Bay.

The clumsy motorist hit the metal railing, which runs over the opening of the Avenue of Remembrance in the town's Memorial Park.

The arch - which bears the dates of both world wars - has been left snapped in two.

Police were called after the crash at 10.20am and diverted traffic around the trapped truck, which was partly blocking the road but has now been moved.

It is not yet known why the driver - who works for Tonbridge-based S&S Distribution Services - was attempting to enter the park, which holds a Remembrance Day service every November.

But a spokesman for the firm said he was delivering to a nearby school and may have mistaken the park for the school's entrance.

Canterbury City Council is aware of the damage and has maintenance workers at the scene.
