Beach-goers at Hampton could see black clouds above at about 8pm as fumes spread across to the coast from Sussex Gardens.
The blaze was sparked by a bonfire getting out of control and setting fencing alight.
A big tree also fell victim to the blaze - causing the residential street to be shrouded in smoke.
Fire crews arrived at the scene and tackled the flames from the adjoining Sunnyhill Road.
One resident said: "The fire was huge. We knew this would happen eventually.
"Luckily the firefighters were here really quickly."
People on Tankerton beach could see clouds of smoke billowing over Hampton.
Firefighters left the scene at around 9pm.
