Ketchup and mushy peas are a must for many people tucking into a plate of fish and chips but are not traditionally considered as flavours for ice cream.
Yet one seaside cafe in Kent is defying culinary logic with its latest batch of flavours - and is promising to divide opinion further with a Marmite ice cream in the near future.
Makcari’s on the Bandstand in Herne Bay has been selling the frozen foodstuffs for just over a week - made with actual tomato ketchup and mushy peas.
Nejmi Hassan, co-owner of Makcari’s, said: “They’re an acquired taste.
"We hope to introduce a new flavour every month.
“We had them for sale over the weekend just gone, but we gave most of it away.
“I’m not saying because they tasted nice, but people were intrigued by ketchup and mushy pea-flavoured ice cream.”
Mr Hassan has urged customers to “name us the flavour and we’ll do it”.
The cafe has also introduced a Marmite ice cream – which it promises you will “either love or hate” – and is trying to make an English breakfast one, with eggs, bacon and baked beans.
