Commuters have faced chaos for the second morning in a row after a car broke down on a major route - and there are more delays in store.

There is queuing traffic on Thanet Way in Whitstable due to the stranded vehicle on the London-bound carriageway.

It had come to a stop between A291 Canterbury Road and A290 Clapham Hill but a police spokesman has confirmed the it has since been recovered.

The A299 was also blocked yesterday after a crash in which a woman in her 30s sadly died. It happened on the London-bound carriageway and nobody else was in the vehicle.

Part of the road was closed in both directions for more than eight hours following the incident and a separate crash on the opposite carriageway.

Emergency crews shut the road between the A290 Clapham Hill in Whitstable and the A291 Canterbury Road near Herne Bay with the London-bound side remaining shut for a number of hours for repair work.

Another crash, which police say was unrelated to the first, happened on the coast-bound carriageway and involved two vans. No serious injuries were reported.

A witness, who didn't want to be named, told KentOnline just before 6am yesterday, two small vans had crashed on the coast-bound side and a car had hit a sign on the London-bound side just before the Whitstable turn-off.

Police are urging witnesses of the crash on the London-bound carriageway to come forward.

Anyone with dashcam footage that could help police can upload it here.

Witnesses or anyone who saw the car before it happened should call the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 01622 798538, quoting reference SM/JW/022/23. You can also email sciu.td@kent.police.uk.

Both carriageways running along the A299 New Thanet Way between Whitstable and Herne Bay will take it in turns to shut for four weeks each from the beginning of April.

With much of the coast- and London-bound traffic expected to be directed along the Old Thanet Way, locals worry there will be gridlock on the approach to the towns at Estuary View and Greenhill.

Kent County Council officials say teams will replace the lights in the Chestfield tunnel and carry out "deep carriageway reconstruction repairs" in the area.
