JustGiving appeal for baby Logan and Herne Bay mum Kelly Williams to support battle with neuroblastoma

00:01, 20 November 2018

Friends have rallied to support the mother of a baby boy battling a rare cancer.

'Little fighter' Logan was just three months old when he was diagnosed with neuroblastoma in August and is now undergoing chemotherapy.

The strain on his mum, Kelly Williams, stretches beyond the emotional turmoil, with the teaching assistant having to bear the huge costs of travelling to and from Great Ormond Street in London.

A single parent, she is also on maternity leave from her job at Herne Bay Infants, but unable to return to work when it ends so will face even more financial strife.

To help, friend Lynn Morgan - who describes Kelly as a "superstar" - has launched a JustGiving fundraising appeal to ease the burden.

"The regular travel to and from Great Ormond Street, all as a single parent, is taking its toll," she said.

"Now, as her maternity leave is coming to an end, the travelling alone is becoming a financial burden, let alone normal living costs.

"I hope we can help make her life a little bit less stressful so she can concentrate on getting Logan well and strong rather than worry about how she‘ll be able to afford to get him to and from the hospital."

Kelly says Logan's illness was not initially spotted by doctors, but eventually the alarming diagnosis was confirmed.

"Neuroblastoma can show itself with marks around the eyes, which is what first alerted us," she said.

"When the doctors first said the word 'cancer', it was awful and it has been quite traumatic.

"I have been operating on auto-pilot but Logan is a real little fighter and seems to take it all in his stride.

"Doctors say that his young age is on his side while they try and cure him, which is encouraging.

"He's amazing and just seems so chilled and happy while I am the one who is stressed out and exhausted."

Kelly also has another son, Tyler, eight, who is looked after by his dad while she is in London with Logan.

The fundraising appeal has already raised more than £400towards its £1,000 target.

"Everyone has been so incredibly kind and supportive and there have even been donations from people I don't know, which is quite overwhelming," Kelly said.
