Plans for a housing development on land near the Thanet Way have been revealed.

Hollamby Estates is seeking residents’ views on proposals for a 22-hectare site off Thornden Wood Road and Greenhill Road.

Although the company says it is early days and would not be drawn on how many homes are planned, the site was previously earmarked for 600 properties as part of the Local Plan.

The development, which has been called Thornden Wood Village, will also include community facilities and public open space.

An exhibition for people to learn more will be held at Herne Bay High School in Bullockstone Road on Wednesday.

The project team is keen to get feedback from residents as they want the final proposals to be shaped on the views of locals and what they believe is needed.

Hollamby Estates is also behind controversial plans for up to 800 homes on land at Strode Farm.

Spokesman Rhian Ellis says the firm will come back at a later date with a more detailed proposal for consultation once the feedback has been analysed.

It is hoped this will be in winter or spring, with an application submitted sometime next year, although the company could not estimate when.

She said: “We really want to look at the local need and want this consultation to be part of our research so we are keen to get people along to get their initial views.

“It’s early days and nothing is set in stone. This all helps the project team put together the master plan.

“Although we cannot pinpoint specific housing numbers yet, we are confident this site will make a contribution towards Canterbury City Council’s housing need.

“We will work closely with the council regarding an appropriate provision of affordable housing that takes into account local and national policies.”

The company’s development manager Chris Crook says Hollamby Estates has been a stakeholder in the local community for many years and remains committed to investing in the area.

“Our research indicates there is great demand for smaller family homes in this part of Herne Bay, and at the moment there is nothing to meet that need,” he said.

“We see this as a great opportunity to integrate new community facilities and public open spaces alongside much-needed new homes and want to hear from local people what they would like to see in the area.”

The exhibition will take place from 4pm until 8pm.
