Concerned residents fear mysterious chalk markings left near homes in Herne Bay could have been drawn by suspected criminals.

Police have investigated reports of two chalk marks drawn outside a home in Holmscroft Road, Beltinge.

And neighbours have taken to the social network website Streetlife to air their concerns about other areas in the town.

Nick P wrote on the site: "I have noticed some faint half-circular markings on the pavements outside of some properties in Sea View Road and Reculver Road.

"They don't seem to be official so I wondered if they were a sign to criminals about the potential for a property to be burgled."

Police spokesman Amanda Wills said officers have offered security advice.

She said: "A Beltinge resident called police on Tuesday, February 23 reporting that two chalk marks had been drawn outside her home in Holmscroft Road two weeks previously.

"She had washed the markings off when she found them.

"The woman was given home security advice and was advised to call police if more markings appeared. Local Police Community Support Officers are aware of the report.

"This is the only reported instance of such chalk marks in the area that we are aware of."
