A British Transport Police spokesman said: "Officers are currently at Herne Bay station, after receiving reports of an unexplained death.

"We were called to the station at 6.55am this morning and attended alongside colleagues from the ambulance service.

"Sadly a person has been pronounced dead at the scene.

"We are now working to establish the circumstances of the incident and identify the deceased."

Police and paramedics arrived at the station shortly after 7am and locked the gates to early-morning commuters.

One man waiting for his train said he had heard a child’s body had been found on the line.

Cab controller Niona Partridge, who works at Abacus Taxis, which has an office just yards away, says drunk teenagers were messing around in the station late last night.

“I’m not sure if it’s anything to do with this, but it sounds like it could be,” she said this morning.

“The first police turned up at about 7am and then there were more police, and more police and more police.

“Then the ambulances arrived, followed by Network Rail.

“A passenger on the other side of the platform was pointing down the tracks towards Thanet, as if he was directing officers to something.

“It definitely sounds like something serious.”
