A primary school has issued a stranger danger alert after a child was approached by a white van driver while walking to school today.

The incident took place at 8.10am when a man in an unmarked white van asked the Herne Bay Junior school pupil if they wanted a lift to school.

The child ran away and reported it to school head teacher Frances Nation, who alerted the police, parents and Kent County Council.

She said: “A whole school assembly took place today to remind the children of stranger danger and the importance of letting trusted adults know immediately.”

Alerts from council education officers were then sent to other schools. Hampton Primary School posted a notice to parents via Facebook.

In the post they advised parents to tell children to avoid speaking with strangers, to report any incidents, and to remain vigilant.

The alert follows reports two weeks ago that a boy was approached while walking in Greenhill to Herne Bay High School.
