Batman isn't moving to Herne Bay, but plans for a house with a ‘batwing’ roof have been revealed

Striking plans for a home Batman would be proud to live in are being considered by council chiefs.
Developers want to erect the two-storey house in the unmade Underdown Lane off Canterbury Road in Herne Bay.
The upper storey will feature an eye-catching ‘batwing’ roof – a design that wouldn’t be out of place in the hit superhero films.
Architect Peter Jackson said: “The new dwelling, which is wanted for the applicant’s family use, is to be spread over two storeys with the upper in a batwing roof. This is a contemporary variation on the traditional chalet bungalow.
“The use of the upper floor for living space, with bedrooms on the ground floor, allows rear-facing first-floor windows to be avoided.”
Neighbour Maureen Garlick has criticised the scheme on the city council’s planning website.
She said: “We do not know the actual size of this proposed dwelling, but from the architect’s diagram, it does look rather modern for this area.
“There needs to be a reasonable amount of land between our boundary and the proposed new house.
“Not only because of potential damage to our foundations, but also noise pollution.
“We have it on good authority that any structural work near our house could have an adverse effect on the foundations and brickwork.”
Mr Jackson says the proposal is unlikely to increase traffic.
“The proposal is for a single dwelling of modest proportions in an established residential area,” he said.
“It stands on part of Underdown Lane that is more urban in its character then the further end, which has a more rural feel.”
A public consultation on the plans closes on Friday, July 21. To comment, visit www.canterbury.gov.uk/planning and search for the CA//17/01435 application.
