Council bosses have closed Herne Bay’s tip after an electrical fault was found with the crushing equipment.
People trying to dispose of household waste have been turned away from the site in Westbrook Lane by site workers since Sunday last week.
It is managed by Kent County Council, and their spokesman John Todd said the fault was identified while upgrades were carried out to the crushing machines.
He said: “In the interest of the safety of both the public and workers the site will remain temporarily closed until it is certified as safe by a specialist electrical engineer.
“We apologise for any inconvenience caused. We are working very hard to get the site up and running again as quickly as possible.”
It is not yet known when the tip will be reopened.
