13:00, 02 July 2015

Sightings of a shark off the Herne Bay coast had panicked swimmers running for the beach yesterday.

But they also had social media fans heading to Facebook and Twitter to give their take on the fishy tale.

9. Whitstable firm Sally4Cakes is hoping for a surge in interest for its shark-themed creation.

8. BBC Radio Kent's Faye Hackwell attempted to bag an interview with the Herne Bay shark (which obviously has its own twitter account) but she was given short shrift.

7. Ah, that explains it all. The Herne Bay shark had clearly left its teddy on the beach. Poor thing.

6. Herne Bay community champ Gerald McCarthy had us worried for a minute after posting this picture on Facebook - but some quick detective work (Googling) quickly discovered the guys were in fact filming for a children's TV series in Australia.

5. It didn't take long for Whitstable's resident 50ft Crabzilla to have his say, offering to protect people from his Herne Bay rival.

4. Thom Burgess was quick to suggest a new marketing tool for the tourism bods at Canterbury City Council.

3. Never a dull moment? Perhaps Gordon Smith, who uploaded this to Facebook, has never been to Herne Bay.

2. Marc Croucher fuelled speculation that the Herne Bay shark could be a hoax when he posted this on Facebook. Looks pretty genuine to us.
