Herne Bay boss Sam Denly resorts to Plan B as games are frozen off
09:30, 26 January 2017
Sam Denly admits this week’s cold snap hijacked Herne Bay's hopes of claiming valuable Ryman League, Division 1 South points.
Frozen pitches led to postponements at home against Three Bridges on Saturday and at Sittingbourne on Tuesday night.
However the Winch’s Field boss was well prepared ahead of the weekend call-off, putting his squad through a three-hour workout at Abbey School in Faversham instead.
He said: “It was frustrating because I had targeted to get at least four points from the two games.
“The Three Bridges game went early but I thought it might be in doubt earlier in the week, so pre-booked the Abbey.
“We had a good session including circuit training, fitness work and five-a-side competitions.”
Bay travel to Hayes Lane in Bromley on Sunday to face Cray Wanderers in the first of two games between the clubs in four days.
They played Lewes in back-to-back matches earlier this month and Denly admitted: “The fixtures have been a bit strange recently, and it’s not ideal but it’s the same for both teams.
“We lost twice against Lewes but I will be looking for the same type of performances against Cray. We must start winning again if we want to avoid being dragged into any relegation dogfight.”
Saturday’s game has been put back 24-hours due to Bromley hosting Southport in the National League and has cost Denly the services of Mark Lovell who is unavailable. Chris Elliott may also be missing.
Gary Sayer could return if he recovers from an eye injury which needed to be glued and stitched.
Striker Leigh Bremner is set to face his former club, having returned to Cray for his fourth spell.
